 Trusopt - General Information

Trusopt® is used to treat glaucoma, a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision. Dorzolamide decreases the pressure in the eye.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Precautions

If you have had a severe allergic reaction to this medicine or any other sulfonamide medicine (such as Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin, glyburide, or probenecid), contact your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine or if a certain medicine is a sulfonamide, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

This medicine may cause blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you can see clearly.

Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

For women, if you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk. Do NOT breast-feed while taking this medicine.

Directions

Trusopt comes as eyedrops. Trusopt eyedrops usually are applied three times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use Trusopt exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Trusopt controls glaucoma but does not cure it. Continue to use Trusopt even if you feel well. Do not stop using Trusopt without talking to your doctor.

To use the eyedrops, follow these instructions:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Use a mirror or have someone else put the drops in your eye.
  3. Remove the protective cap. Make sure that the end of the dropper is not chipped or cracked.
  4. Avoid touching the dropper tip against your eye or anything else.
  5. Hold the dropper tip down at all times to prevent drops from flowing back into the bottle and contaminating the remaining contents.
  6. Lie down or tilt your head back.
  7. Holding the bottle between your thumb and index finger, place the dropper tip as near as possible to your eyelid without touching it.
  8. Brace the remaining fingers of that hand against your cheek or nose.
  9. With the index finger of your other hand, pull the lower lid of the eye down to form a pocket.
  10. Drop the prescribed number of drops into the pocket made by the lower lid and the eye. Placing drops on the surface of the eyeball can cause stinging.
  11. Close your eye and press lightly against the lower lid with your finger for 2-3 minutes to keep the medication in the eye. Do not blink.
  12. Replace and tighten the cap right away. Do not wipe or rinse it off.
  13. Wipe off any excess liquid from your cheek with a clean tissue. Wash your hands again.

Side Effects

Tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you are using Trusopt.

Trusopt helps most people with high eye pressure and glaucoma, but it may have unwanted side effects in a few people. All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects.

  • bitter taste, dry mouth
  • nose bleeds
  • throat irritation

  • swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing
  • severe and sudden onset of pinkish, itchy swellings on the skin, also called hives or nettlerash
